Print File Prep and Soft-Proof Notes
Prepare a file for print and tell me what will change when it leaves the screen. JOB What it is: [PACKAGING | POSTER | CARD] Size and bleed: [INCHES OR MM, BLEED] Color profile the printer asked for: [PROFILE OR "they did not say"] Black type: [YES, SMALL] Images: [RGB MASTERS] Finish: [COATED | UNCOATED | UNKNOWN] PLAN 1) The questions to ask the printer before converting: profile, rich black versus plain black, minimum type size, and whether they want PDF/X. 2) Soft-proof the RGB master with the profile, and list what will shift (brights blues, neon, deep reds). Do not "fix" those by cranking saturation that cannot print. 3) Small black text stays in the black channel, not a four-color black. Show how to check. 4) Bleed and type clearance from the trim. Crop marks only if they asked. 5) Export settings and a preflight list: fonts outlined or embedded (say which the printer wants), images not RGB if they demanded CMYK, no extra spot colors unless I named one. If they did not name a profile, do not invent a conversion and call it final.
